RatVenture: The City Below the Sands

A tabletop dungeoncrawler set in an alternate Lovecraftian universe. The adventurers explore the aeon dead City Below the Sands in search of treasure, power, and knowledge, though the denizens of the necropolis do not enjoy being disturbed.

The lost city that once stood here was home to an advanced race of bestial beings that were enslaved by the Outer Gods. Over the centuries more and more the influence of those incomprehensible magics and alien interferences had become hard wired into their culture, entwined in their sense of self. Experiments and foul abuse of the cosmic secrets given to them had led those primordial beings to ruin, their civilization crumbled and sunk deep into the earth. What abominations they conjured from beyond the stars no one will truly know, until now...

Upon the flame-scorched dunes, columns of basalt and obsidian spires rise from the sands, reflecting the sunlight onto the coarse ground, radiating mesmerizing cascades of light. For miles around the endless sea of sand is peppered with these obelisks far beyond the horizon, with no telling what made them. The zenith of a monolithic cenotaph rises from the ebony sand - the oppressive ziggurat awakened by a force unknown. Could this be the entrance to the lost city?
